The Bessie Schönberg Laboratory in Composition
Under the direction of Keely Garfield and Lawrence Goldhuber
8 Sessions - Fridays, 10am-1pm
February 8-March 28, 2008
(Note: Final Showing will be held on March 28 at 2pm)
Application Guidelines
Deadline for submissions: December 10, 2007 Dance Theater Workshop's Bessie
Schönberg Laboratory in Composition provides an opportunity for experienced
choreographers to present, view, and discuss new work. A select group
of artists are accepted into the Lab to work under the direction of a
guest choreographer and a guest critic. Bessie Schönberg and David
R. White created the Laboratory in Composition in 1981 in an effort to
provide a supportive alternative to the isolation within which artists
often work. Over the course of eight sessions, participants work to develop
a new piece. Artists are encouraged to use the time to explore unfamiliar
directions and challenge the boundaries and assumptions they bring to
their creative process. At the conclusion of the Lab, participants have
an opportunity to present their work to friends and members of Dance Theater
Workshop's Programming staff during an informal showing at Dance Theater
Workshop's Bessie Schönberg Theater. Recent instructors include:
Donna Uchizono, Yvonne Meier, Ishmael Houston-Jones, RoseAnne Spradlin,
Patricia Hoffbauer, and Neil Greenberg. Participation in the Bessie Schönberg
Laboratory in Composition is by application only. The fee for the workshop
is $250 for Dance Theater Workshop members or $300 for non-members.
