Keely Garfield (Choreographer)
Marcus Behrens (Director)
Dance Film Project for Canal arte (France/Germany/USA, and Radio Bremen Television (Germany)

In 2005, Keely Garfield will collaborate with German film-maker Marcus Behrens on a dance film of her work for Canal arte, and Radio Bremen Televison.

Marcus Behrens is a German film director and editor who has filmed documentaries, art videos, and distinguished dance films. His innovative editing techniques capture movement in innovative and provocative ways. Behrens work has been shown at numerous festivals and screenings and as well as on television. Behren’s fascination with dance and his belief that his original style of editing fit the dance medium perfectly, led him to start a series of collaborations with choreographers and dancers for a new programming slot on Canal arte. Canal arte is a non-profit public TV channel which is a joint venture of German and French National TV networks, devoted to arts and culture.

Garfield and Behrens share an artistic commonality expressed in dark humor with dramatic overtones, a rigorous exploration of themes, and an interest in bringing movement into extreme focus. Further, the choreographer and director share an interest in the creation of abstract narratives, musical sensitivity, and a dedication to inventing new vocabularies in dance and film respectively.

The film will incorporate many of Behrens inventive approaches. His past dance films have been shot in restaurants, laundromats, train stations, stairwells, fields and other evocative locations. They have combined footage shot from a variety of perspectives including cameras suspended above the dancers, slow motion action juxtaposed with frenetic action, and inter-cut images of the dancers movements blended with the swirling motion of the camera or the incidental activity of passersby, vehicles or even the wind moving through the trees.
