Organizing Principles
Keely Garfield choreographs poetically
subversive dance sagas that
illustrate subtle and seismic shifts in emotional and physical states.
Garfield's moving tales are characterized by aching and ironic invention
that is acutely articulated in softly-sensed, declarative, and warped
ways.
Highly organized and immediately disrupted, her work operates in a
condition of perpetual heightened-alert.
Garfield's work probes the inter-relatedness of internal and external
space. In the work, space is shared, invaded, negotiable, static, fluid,
immense, and alternately made miniscule. An intensely personal atmosphere
permeates throughout as Garfield is particularly interested in exploiting
dance for its inherent potential for intimacy and capacity to bring
specific elements into extreme focus.
