“In Mother…I wanted to conjure space that was slammed up against itself, no breathing room, obstructive, combative, crowded with partnering, and gesturally extravagant” Keely Garfield

Links are forged, disrupted and renewed as two women test their mettle in the face of a maudlin and magnetic matriarch .

the earth quaked
the milk shaked
the sun baked
the heart ached
–Keely Garfield

“Succinct, stylish, darkly funny… exquisite, they give us romance, acute frustration and lots more all worked into a beautifully composed whole.” The Village Voice

“Keely Garfield is one of the wittiest of today’s experimentalist choreographers…. The performing is as subtle as the hilarity of the choreography itself.” The New York Times

Premiere: Dance Theater Workshop (New York, NY), January 20, 1998
Commissioned by DTW’s Bessie Schönberg/First Light Program with funding provided by the New York State Council on the Arts. Additional funding provided by the Jerome Foundation and the Dance Ink Foundation.
